Pool Heater

Pool Heater is a device that is used to heat the water in the pool. The water inside the pool will be maintained at the desired temperature, despite the external climate changes. This helps the user to swim comfortably in the pool whenever he wishes to. The water in the pool will be warm in acute winters and on cloudy days too.

The heater should be chosen considering the following factors. They are

  • The size of the pool
  • The light exposure of the pool
  • Seasonal variation of pool area
  • Exposure to people
  • The temperature of the water source
  • The depth of the pool, etc.

There are basically 3 types of heaters. They are

  1. Solar heaters
  2. Electric heaters
  3. Gas heaters

Solar Pool Heating

This is the most popular heater form available in the market. They work on natural sunlight, converting it into heat energy. For solar heaters, there will be a water collector on the roof. The water will be circulated to the roof and will be exposed to direct light. Thus, the water gets warm and will be brought back to the pool. Electric sensors and controllers will be installed to monitor and maintain the temperature variations inside the pool. If the pool reaches at the expected temperature, the process will be halted. Else the circulator will circulate the water until the desired temperature is reached.

Advantages of solar pool heating

  • Low cost
  • High efficiency
  • Eco-friendly
  • Reliable energy
  • Durability
  • Less maintenance

Although it has several advantages, these heaters will have the following disadvantages either. They are

  • Design variations are less
  • Primary cost for installation is high
  • The photovoltaic cells have to be recharged frequently
  • Variable temperature rise happens during other seasons than summer

Electric Element

The electric heater is also pocket- friendly. They are popular for the ease of installation and usage. They serve to be very reliant and consistent. They heat the pool by immersing and heating the water between the pool and the heating element. For an easier understanding, it works like the water boiling inside a closed vessel. This can be preferred at limited space installations.

  • Can be installed it limited spaces
  • Can be used throughout the year
  • Not season dependent.
  • Disadvantages
  • High installation cost
  • Increased electricity bills
  • Frequent maintenance
  • Most suitable for small pools

Electric Heat Pump

The electric heat pump works almost like an air conditioner which heats the water and emits cool air. This heater does the reverse. It heats up the water using the air compressed inside. This is the fastest means of heating water and can be used almost any time throughout the year. Heat pumps work similar to that of an air conditioning system. The heat pump collects the temperature of the atmosphere and transfer that heat to the water to make the water comfortably warm.

  • Fast
  • High sensitivity sensors used
  • Easy installation
  • Can be used throughout the year
  • Best for short-term usage
  • Disadvantages
  • Elevated electricity bills
  • Less efficient than gas heaters
  • Maintenance charges higher than that of solar heaters.

Gas Heating

Gas pool heaters are popular for their robustness and flexibility. It heats up the pool suddenly or slowly. They can be used in Spa also. Of all heaters, a gas heater is considered to be more portable and efficient. They can be easily maintained and the temperature of the water will be consistent regardless of time.

These will be installed and maintained at a modest cost, but the performance is worth it. This requires constant monitoring and periodic servicing. These can perform consistently at all seasons and almost in all adverse conditions. They have proven to be highly reliable either. This can be used along with solar heaters. So when it is night time, or a cloudy day, electric heaters will work. Except those times, solar heater will work whenever there is sunlight available.

  • More robust than any other heaters
  • High flexibility
  • Good performance
  • Works even in poor weather
  • Can be incorporated with solar heaters

Solar heaters are the cheapest as they fetch energy from nature and uses photovoltaic cells. These reduce the burden of electricity bills and help maintain a budget. They also save some pennies on maintenance and cleaning too.

Electric heaters will be a little more expensive. Even if the installation cost is not much, the cost of electricity and maintenance matters, though it takes a bit more electricity, it can be used for the long term despite seasonal changes.

Gas heaters are the best of the bunch, but not in the case of cost. They need a certain amount of money to be installed and they have to be well maintained. Still, they have proven to be better than electric heaters.

Tips to reduce pool heating cost

Maintain minimum temperature in the pool- So that lesser energy will be required to warm up water. This, on the contrary, will bring down electric charges also.

Use pool covers- Pool covers are used to cover the pools and thereby keeping the water warm. When exposed, the water cools off suddenly where as a hot pool with a blanket can maintain its temperature effectively.

Maintenance-Maintain the pool heat regularly. Change the filters and refill the gasses. Keep the pool and the heaters clean and service it whenever possible.

How to protect heater

Now a day’s most of the people use these types of the heater and they are easily affected by dirt dust leaves and even pine cones. So the heaters have to be protected by using a cover which is now easily available in the market. The small amount invested for the cover will help you save a ton on maintenance.

Also, servicing the heater periodically and replacing damaged parts will extend its life for many years. The same shall be monitored by an experienced technician promptly, so that replacements or damages can be identified and resolved in the beginning itself.

Things to notice while purchasing heater

An understanding of heaters and its advantages might prompt the users to buy and try one at home. If you are planning for such a purchase, some little things can be noticed to avoid lots of money and energy. They are

  • Compare the best prices in the market
  • Check for nests online reviews
  • Choose a good contractor or distributor who offers frequent servicing
  • Look for quality than quantity
